Let’s do a “PUPPY PUSHUP”

This is a great little exercise game to help develop your pup’s concentration and attention skills. Once she is responding to her name and starting to focus on you, then she is ready for this fun game. However, you may still need to hold her collar and steady her. Attention and focus are the basis of your training. Remember, if you cannot keep your puppy’s attention you cannot train her.

Let’s have a go.

Give your pup the signal for SIT. Treat when the bum hits the ground.

Give her the signal for DOWN. Treat when her body follows her front paws.

While still in the DOWN position, encourage her back into the SIT position by moving your right hand upwards. As soon as she is back in the SIT position reward with a treat.

Now you have done a PUPPY PUSH UP! Congratulations!

SIT treat DOWN treat SIT treat.

When she can move from one command to another, try to do it without a food reward, then only give the treat at the end of the “Pushup”.

SIT DOWN SIT. Treat reward.

See how many you can do in a row. How cute is that? Lots of yummies please.

Summary

It’s your turn for a reward. This week has been very busy and you deserve some time to yourself and a special treat of your own. In the first three weeks you’ve taught your puppy to SIT and to lie DOWN, using hand and voice signals. She can do a Puppy Pushup and is starting to respond to STAY. These training skills will be part of your daily routine for a long time, so if things are going pear shaped, give it all away for a while, have a good laugh and cuddle with your pet and start again tomorrow. Or next week.
